SECOND CAREER
Second Career is a Government of Ontario funded retraining program for laid-off workers who lack the skills necessary to find full-time employment in the current labour market. It is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so you may be asked to contribute what you can to your training or education. Retraining is also required to transition you into high skilled occupations that are in the local labour market. Up to $28,000 is provided for tuition, books, transportation and a basic living allowance. Additional support may be available to accommodate, the needs of people with disabilities, dependent care, costs of living away from home and academic upgrading.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
You may qualify for up to $28,000.00 for costs including:
- Tuition
- Books
- Living expenses
- Child care
- Travel
- Transportation
- Disability supports
- Basic living allowance (during skill training)
ELIGIBILITY
You are eligible for Second Career if you:
- you have been laid off since January 2005 and have not been working
- you have been laid off and are working a temporary job just to cover costs
- you are impacted or layoff due to COVID 19
- If you’re receiving Employment Insurance (EI), or have in the past, you can still apply.
To receive financial assistance, you must provide proof of the following:
- For how long you have been unemployed, or working your temporary job, and looking for work
- where you have submitted your CV, cover letters and the response you got from them
- your level of education
- where you worked before, for how long and what skills you needed for that work
- what skills you want to get and where you can get trained in them
